It’s been a great summer. And though there’s a lot of work to officiate a wedding—I’ve enjoyed officiating weekend weddings. Of course, it’s not about the day but about the marriage. Yesterday, I “married” a young couple who’ve already faced some tough life challenges. And, it was the difficult places of their life which allowed them to see their love for each other, the kind that can only be described from God, the kind that will last for a lifetime. So. They chose the word, always, to be their word to describe their journey in life together, a word to remember as they face the difficult times as well as the good times, a word describing their commitment of love for God and one another.
While the bride, groom, and wedding party could hear the message, the guests were only able to hear some of the words. At first, I was disappointed for the couple and their families, thinking of all the hard work put it into that moment. Until. One guest after the other, told me the word, “always” impacted them.
I’m excited for the words that will be heard today, words said by Jesus in the ancient days, explaining how to live a blessed life, defining the identity and purpose of those who chose to live the blessed life. The powerful words set into motion centuries ago, teach us a radical way to live today.
We will focus on three of Jesus’s words in Matthew 5:1-16. . . blessed, salt, and light.
